однокристальный, 4-, 8-, 16-, или 32-разрядный микрокомпьютер, разработанный специально для встраиваемых систем управления технологическими процессами, периферийными, коммуникационными, бытовыми приборами и другими устройствами с целью минимизации числа микросхем (chip count), энергопотребления и стоимости электроники. Принципиальное отличие микроконтроллера от микропроцессора в том, что микропроцессор - это только ЦП, а микроконтроллер, кроме ЦП, обычно содержит ОЗУ (сравнительно небольшого объёма), ППЗУ/ПЗУ, таймеры, счётчики, последовательные и параллельные интерфейсы, порты ввода-вывода, необязательные ЦАП, АЦП и/или другие встроенные устройства, необходимые для конкретных применений. Микроконтроллеры получили широкое распространение в автомобильной электронике - так, среднее число этих приборов в современном автомобиле около 60 и оно продолжает увеличиваться
